Music Examples

Poem for flute/piccolo/alto flute and harp

Example 1: page 1, showing the two segments of the tone row (C-Db-B-A-G#-A# at the beginning, and E-Gb-F-D-G-D# beginning approximately thirty-three seconds into the duet), with ornaments and clashing sonorities.

Example 2: pages 4-5, showing two repetitive five-note figures (G4-D4-F4-F#4-D4 on page 4, Bb5-Ab5-Gb5-F5-Gb5 on page 5), along with some special harp effects (rapidly rubbing the strings with the flat of the hand, and playing with the fingernails).

Poem for daegum and kayagum

Example 1: opening section, showing emphasis on Eb and interplay with other pitches, and Korean influences (long notes, dynamic changes, vibrato, pitch bending, ornaments).

Music for Chamber Ensemble

Example 1: mm. 1-12, with violins forming a six-note chord (B4-C#5-D5-E5-F#5-A5), horn parts centered around D, and neighbor-tone figures on conflicting pitches in the violins (C5-D5-E5-G5-A5-B5) and violas/violoncellos (Db4-Eb4-F4-F#4-G#4-A#4).

Example 2: mm. 121-132, climax with the twelve string parts moving independently up the chromatic scale leading to the tone cluster with all twelve pitches.

String Quartet II

Example 1: mm. 1-10, showing the opening D4-D#4-E4-F4 sonority, shifting pitches, movement up a minor second and the return to the original sonority.

Example 2: mm. 28-30, showing neighbor-tone figures on conflicting pitches (G# in viola, Bb in second violin, A in first violin).

Example 3: mm. 51-58, showing the same pitches sequences on Db4-Eb4 on four conflicting rhythmic patterns.

Nocturne - Sookook II

Example 1: mm. 1-12, with violin harmonics, long notes in the clarinet, and piano harmonies spaced a minor second apart that may be displaced to form other intervals.

Example 2: mm. 13-18, showing contrapuntal interplay on a long melodic line.

Example 3: mm. 84-95, portion of section four, showing the heavily accented pitches and angular lines with octave displacement.

Repercussions

Example 1: mm. 31-40, showing some of the restatements of the unifying melodic material in various note values.

Example 2: mm. 46-58, showing transformation of the material through octave displacement in various note values, and the first xylophone/vibraphone duet.

Sonorous Moments

Example 1: mm. 1-14, focusing on the harmonic presentation of the two central pitch groups in the pianos (D-F-G, G#-B-C#).

Example 2: mm. 19-26, showing melodic presentation of the pitch groups D-F-G and G#-B-C# with the melodic and harmonic alteration of these original pitch sequences.

Example 3: mm. 60-69, with the three-note pitch groups presented simultaneously in different rhythms, and the first pianist playing inside the instrument with nails along with the glockenspiel.

Example 4: mm. 139-144, showing a return to the harmonic presentation of the motives within 12/8 and the a fast 4/4 meter.
